Laundry

How to clean a laundry room.

A short reset for the room where laundry happens. Surfaces, lint, baskets, supplies, and floors. You are not deep cleaning the appliances today. You are clearing the room around them.

What this reset is, and is not

A laundry room reset is the surfaces and the lint, not the appliances themselves. You are not pulling out the washer to clean behind it today. You are clearing the surface mess that builds up while you are running loads. Once a month for this kind of reset works for most homes.

Supplies that help

  • Multi-surface cleaning wipes for the washer and dryer tops
  • Microfiber cloth for streak-free finish on the appliance fronts
  • Two laundry baskets: one for dirty, one for clean and unfolded
  • Lint bin next to the dryer to catch lint and pocket trash
  • Storage bins for detergent pods, dryer sheets, and stain remover
  • Optional: a dryer vent brush for the maintenance day a few times a year

Before you start

Move any loose clothes out of the room first so the floor and the tops of the machines are clear. Take any in-progress load out of the washer or dryer and either start it or finish it before you clean. A wet load sitting mid-clean will get forgotten.

Minimum win

If today is hard, do these three things.

  • Clear the lint trap (and the lint bin if you have one)
  • Wipe the top of the washer and dryer
  • Take out the trash or lint bin

Step-by-step method

  • Step 1, clothes: move any loose clothes to a basket or the bedroom
  • Step 2, lint trap: pull the screen, scrape the lint off, vacuum the screen if you can
  • Step 3, washer top: wipe the surface with a multi-surface wipe
  • Step 4, dryer top: same wipe-down, do not skip this
  • Step 5, machine fronts: wipe both, especially around the door
  • Step 6, washer gasket: wipe inside the rubber gasket on front-loaders (mildew zone)
  • Step 7, supplies shelf: restock detergent, dryer sheets, stain remover. Store in labeled bins if you have them.
  • Step 8, baskets: empty and sort. Dirty in one, clean-and-unfolded in the other.
  • Step 9, lost socks: check behind the washer, inside the gasket, and inside fitted sheets
  • Step 10, floor: sweep or vacuum visible lint and pocket trash. Mop only if needed.
  • Step 11, trash: take out the lint bin and any other trash

If you only have 5 minutes

Lint trap, top of both machines, and a quick sweep. That covers the loudest mess and resets the room enough that the next load feels easier to start.

Tiny maintenance routine

These are not for every visit. They are for a maintenance day a few times a year:

  • Run a washer cleaning cycle (or vinegar cycle if your manual allows)
  • Brush the dryer vent with a dryer vent brush
  • Wipe baseboards in the laundry room
  • Pull the dryer forward and vacuum behind it
  • Re-sort storage bins on the shelves

If you have more energy

  • Wash the bath mat or kitchen rugs in the same session
  • Wipe down the iron and ironing board
  • Relabel anything that has lost its label
  • Clear out laundry products you do not use

What to avoid

  • Putting damp laundry back in the washer without checking the gasket (mildew loop)
  • Stacking heavy items on top of the washer (vibration shortens machine life)
  • Using harsh sprays inside the drum
  • Leaving the dryer running while you leave the house
